Helping local people to care for each other and to plan ahead for the future

About the Eleanor Palmer Trust Residential Care Home at Cantelowes House

The Eleanor Palmer Trust residential care home, known as 27 Cantelowes House, is located in Spring Close, just off Bells Hill, in Barnet.  Cantelowes House is a modern two-storey building with wheelchair access set in well-maintained, landscaped gardens.  It’s on a quiet road, close to local shops and amenities, about half a mile from Barnet High Street, and has plenty of parking for visitors.

Cantelowes House opened in 1991.  It provides safe, comfortable, hygienic, bright and airy accommodation for 32 elderly people.  The typical current rate charged from 1St July 2008 is £540 per week, and is subject to periodic review.

There are 30 single bed-sitting rooms, most of which have ensuite facilities.  There is 1 double room for a couple, or for wheelchair users.  All rooms have a 24-hour nurse call system (Piper Haven).

Residents are welcome to bring some of their own possessions by agreement with the manager, to make their room feel homely.  TV, radio and telephone phone points are conveniently located in all rooms - which can also be used for internet access if required.  Currently one room is made available for those requiring short stay/respite care.

The large communal lounge has big bay windows overlooking the garden.  Seating is arranged in groups, so residents can enjoy conversations with each other, or take part in the various activities that are organised for them, including board games.

For those who prefer their own company, there are quieter reading areas or places to watch TV or listen quietly to music.

The spacious dining area allows plenty of room to move around in between tables.  Attention to detail shows here – little vases of flowers, tablecloths and napkins to make residents feel a little bit pampered.  When there’s a special occasion like someone’s milestone birthday, Valentine’s Day, Bastille Day, Christmas Day, etc.  the dining room is decorated and a special menu created.  The staff sit and eat lunch with the residents, both enjoying the relaxed and sociable aspect of mealtimes.

Care staff are available 24 hours per day and we can call in doctors, district nurses, dentists, chiropodists and other specialists as and when necessary.

Entertainment is an important part of life at Cantelowes House.  We organise all sorts of activites from quizzes and bingo to art classes, Tai Chi, exercise classes, reminiscence evenings, singing, and accompanied day trips out.

Some of the watercolours painted by residents are on display in the reception area.

The landscaped patio is a lovely place to sit outside on a summer’s day.  It overlooks our gardens and pond, which attracts birds and other local wildlife.

We have our own minibus which is used for residents’ outings.

St Stephens Church is a short walk away.
