Helping local people to care for each other and to plan ahead for the future

Lindsey's story

Hello, I’m Lindsey Wharhirst, a resident at Cantelowes House.  Before coming here in 2005 I lived with my wife and my son Andrew.  My daughter lives in Hoddesdon now.

Just after the war I bought a house in Barnet from my uncle, who was a local builder.  I paid £3k for that house, which was a fortune at the time.

I left school at the age of 16 and went to work for a stockbroker in the City - I always liked figurework.  I used to commute by train from High Barnet and then, when we got a car, I drove to work.  In those days it was easy to park, but by the time I retired there was much more traffic on the roads.  Apart from the war, I was with the same company until 1968, when we got taken over.  I worked for the merchant bank which managed the takeover, until I retired in 1981, so I’ve only ever had two jobs!  My wife found plenty of gardening and decorating for me to do when I retired.  We enjoyed the odd day trip to Worthing to visit my aunt, and we went on holiday to Norfolk.  We used to stay in a house they said would never fall over the cliff - but eventually it did!

Choosing the right care home

When the time came to find a care home for me, we’d heard good reports of Cantelowes House, both from a social worker and from one of my relations who had been very happy here.  I didn’t look at any other homes.  I came here for lunch one day and it struck me as being very comfortable.  I had to wait quite a while, but was found a room here eventually.

Enjoying a new life at Cantelowes House

I have tinnitus and find it difficult to hear.  I am also a bit of a loner, but they are all very friendly here.  I do lots of crosswords and enjoy Su Doku.  I also like eating chocolate.  My son brings my wife down quite often, several times a week and my daughter comes once a week.  We have got two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.  It’s very comfortable here and we are well looked after.  Nothing is too much trouble.  The food is very good.  We have regular meetings with the staff and they ask my opinion, but I don’t have much to tell them - there’s nothing I would like to change.  I am quite happy.
